SUMMARY:Lead Poisoning: A Lifetime Challenge
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM\nBrochure \n9:00 am–9:10 am\nWelcome/Introductions\nMorri Markowitz\, MD and Nancy Redkey \n9:10 am–10:00 am\n“Long-term Consequences of Childhood Lead Exposure”\nAaron Reuben\, MEM\, PhD (pending) \nThis talk will present what we have learned about lead from four decades of follow-up in a New Zealand-based longitudinal birth cohort born during the era of leaded gasoline.  Evidence will focus on socioeconomic life trajectories\, psychological health\, cognitive ability\, and brain integrity at midlife following childhood lead exposure. \n10:00 am – 10:50 am\n“Toxic Hearts: The Mysterious Decline in Coronary Heart Disease”\nBruce Lanphear\, MD\, MPH \nIn the fall of 1978\, physicians and scientists gathered in Bethesda\, MD to solve a mystery:  Why had the death rate for coronary heart disease (CHD) suddenly plummeted?  This presentation will focus on three distinct periods to explore the role of lead and other toxic chemicals in the decline.  Building on data from the United States and Britain\, we will investigate the reasons for the mysterious decline in CHD deaths. \n10:50 am–11:40 am\n“Consequences of In-Utero Lead Exposure”\nMorri E. Markowitz\, MD \nPregnancy is a unique situation where lead poisoning can occur in a woman and her fetus.  When does the fetus become susceptible to lead effects?  Do the effects persist after delivery and\, if so\, for how long?  This presentation will address these questions. \n11:40 – 11:45 am Wrap Up \n \n
